How to Evaluate Your AI Agent? Comparison of 3 Mainstream Evaluation Frameworks
I recently needed to benchmark a custom coding agent I built. Figuring out if an agent actually performs better after a prompt tweak is notoriously difficult. Relying on "vibes" doesn't scale. Here is my comparison of the three mainstream evaluation frameworks I tested.
Why Agent Evaluation is Hard
Unlike simple RAG setups where you can measure retrieval accuracy, agents interact with environments over multiple turns. They make plans, use tools, and sometimes recover from errors. Evaluating this requires simulating the environment and scoring the final outcome, not just a text generation.
1. LangSmith Evaluate
LangChain's integrated evaluation tool is great if you are already using their ecosystem.
- Pros: Excellent tracing UI. You can see exactly which tool failed at which step.
- Cons: Heavily tied to LangChain. Setting up custom environment sandboxes for complex agent tasks takes some wrestling.
- My take: Best for basic tool-use agents and routing evaluations.
2. AutoEval (by AutoGPT)
A community-driven framework designed specifically for autonomous agents.
- Pros: Built with multi-step autonomy in mind. It handles complex, open-ended tasks well.
- Cons: The learning curve is steep, and the documentation can be fragmented.
- My take: Good if you are building fully autonomous, exploratory agents.
3. Ragas / AgentEval
While Ragas started for RAG evaluation, newer iterations and similar frameworks (like AgentEval) focus on LLM-as-a-judge for agent trajectories.
- Pros: Very flexible. You feed it the trace of the agent's actions, and it grades based on criteria like "tool efficiency" and "goal completion".
- Cons: Can be expensive if you use GPT-4 to judge every step of a long trajectory.
- My take: The most practical approach I found for custom Python agents that don't rely on LangChain.
My Setup Example
Here is a simplified snippet of how I run a custom LLM-as-a-judge evaluation script:
def evaluate_trajectory(trajectory, goal):
prompt = f"""
Evaluate the following agent trajectory against the goal.
Goal: {goal}
Trajectory: {trajectory}
Score 0-10 on Goal Completion and Efficiency. Return JSON.
"""
# Call your LLM here
response = call_llm(prompt)
return response
